Safe Kids Washoe County took part in the PHOTOVOICE project. The issue was that the rural area around Esther Bennett Elementary School was not a safe environment for students to walk to and from school. The action taken by Safe Kids Washoe County was successful and drew attention from the Washoe County Commission to make changes to the area. Safe Kids presented 286 advocacy letters signed by students, parents, and faculty from three elementary schools to the Washoe County Commission.
Each October FedEx Express employees and Safe Kids Worldwide coalitions team up to teach children safe pedestrian behaviors through fun and engaging safety activities. Past events have included participating in International Walk to School Day and focusing on walking safely on Halloween. The events attract media attention and serve as a launch pad for future pedestrian safety efforts at the schools.
How We Get Things Done
Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx Express activate pedestrian safety committees at schools to address the dangers identified on International Walk to School Day throughout the rest of the year. The committees frequently work to increase enforcement of traffic laws, educate parents and other drivers about the dangers of speeding near schools, and teach children safe pedestrian behaviors. School safety committees often expand to include other safety programs and messages for a well-rounded program.
